Our insurance company won't cover our teenager to learn to drive in our Volvo Estate so we're going to buy a small runaround, eg Ford Focus, Honda Jazz etc. Can anyone advise re small cars in the lower insurance groups please?

you would be better off buying a fiesta or corsa,as they are in a low group.
Ford Ka or a small engined Ford Fiesta. Skoda Fabia 1.2 is a good choice but there aren't too many around. There are plenty of second hand Fiat Punto 1.2 8 valves on the market. All the above are in the low insurance bracket.
Here's all the group 1 (lowest ins group) cars......

I wanted to be put on my parents insurance aswell when i was a learner, my dad has a nissan almera, 1.5 S and his insurers wanted 5739.76!!! My dad said "no way, not in a million years!!"
I had a Fiat Punto when I learned to drive (1.2 litre), it was a good car to learn in, and the insurance was quite cheap. Also I built up my own no claims bonus instead of being a 2nd driver on my parent's insurance, which has helped me in the long run.
