can you put petrol in a diesel vauxhall astra by mistake

Of course you can,a lot of people do it by mistake,but its not advisable,as it will cost you a lot of money to put right,if you do it by mistake,then realise,dont drive it or start the engine.i have done it and luckily stopped filling after �5 worth. i still had to have the tank drained.
An old school answer woulb be that its fine to put a little petrol into a lot of diesel,i recall that this was common practise in the haulage industry in freezing temperatures to avoid diesel from waxing.However modern diesel vehicles have a catalytic converter which wouldnt like petrol too much,neither would the injectors for that matter,or the fuel filter etc...
