Hi, you put an answer to my head gasket and bolts Q on rover engine, ok am gonna replace the gasket but from what you said, the bolts arent so essential - mine is a t-series 220 coupe dohc 16v (non turbo), same as an 820, do you reckon i'd get away wit using the same bolts ?.

i would'nt use the old bolts. very few engine manufacturers reccomend this now, and for the price of a new set; whats the point? hi! kebabmeister how's the hangovers....

Well, we never replaced any head bolts on the M16 (forerunner of T16) and the T16 (your engine) engines and we replaced loads of head gaskets on those engines (especially the M16) since they were quite notorius for oil leaks (we didn't get any 'come backs' by the way!).

Hehe v64paul, Oktoberfest finished on the 4th October!  It lasted for over 2 weeks!  There were 14 large tents, the biggest capable of holding 10,000 people!  And yes, I did have a few headaches!!

Oh, just check the bolts for thread damage and make sure they're all the same length.  Seriously though we never replaced any and Rover never recommended them to be replaced either (unless damaged).  (I left Rover garages in 1996).

Thanks kebeb ! - although im a bit confused now, on the camshaft pulleys it says M16 so i guess it must be an m-series, maybe its a replacement ?.

As for the price of the bits, im on a tight budget basically and my girlfriend (who i bought the car for) isnt likely to go over 2000rpm anyway !!!

What year is it again?

The M16 had two cam covers in black aluminium with the top shaved off to display something like 'Twin Cam' on one cover and '16 Valve' on the other cover (I think!).  The back of the engine they'd be a very large aluminium (silver) huge inlet manifold.

The T16 had more black engine covers which were smooth.  I think they had the writing still but it was all in black.  I'm not sure if they put the M16 in the 220.

Maybe its had a mix of parts fitted or a different head (if thats possible?) as it has M16 stamped in the camshaft pulleys, but has the all black cam covers you describe, the missus is going to get the valves and gasket set tomorrow so i'll soon find out when i put them side by side.

Can you tell from the engine number ? it is 20T4HH79101863 and chassis no. is XWCCGBD057695

I would guess that the '20T' would stand for 2.0 litre T-Series.  T16 and M16 gaskets are very different.

The pulleys being stamped with M16 could mean anything really.

Cool, ill stick with t-series. The valves were the correct ones anyway, theyre ground in and head is ready to go back on tomorrow.
