depends what light you are on about - orangey Engine one should be okay - (emission light) I think you can drive for ages, normally a lamda sensor problem
from what i remember of my sons 1.
If it is the lambda sensor then as gsr600 says you can drive for quite a distance. In fact mine decided to come on while in Scotland and was able to drive 600 miles home and beyond. The problem is with your MOT as your emissions may be up the creek.

I have driven the car and noticed the car petrol light is on (this is my sons car) it is on the reserve on red the engine light has not come on I have put 5 ltr petrol in I cant find anything wrong i suspect that it may have been on reserve for a while maybe it has sucked up some of the gunk I don't know. so far its running ok. what do you think I should do .leave it or get some one to check it out ?
The petrol light comes on with very roughly one gallon left. The car must have been very nearly out of fuel. No problem driving it with 5 litres (just over one gallon) on board.
As you realise it is not a good idea to run on empty in an old car because you can suck up some sludge and clog the injectors.
Find me a young driver who has not got the the petrol light lit! It's all about cash flow.
I can never understand this idea that there is sludge at the bottom of the fuel tank.

Surely the contents get a damn good shake up every time you drive?
The engine light can be any number of things, it is actually the MIL which is the malfunction indicator lamp, this can be triggered by any one of a number of engine sensors not only the emissions system (lambda).
You would have to give more information, vauxhall corsa's suffer with problems associated with the crank position sensor which can cause the car not to start or suddenly stop. if this happens once the MIL lamp will come on until the fault is cleared even if the car does run again. The ECU stores the fault and the MIL lamp stays illuminated.

Bottom line if the engine light is on get it checked, it could become serious!
Ya sure it will be safe to drive a short distance around 6 miles.
