Skoda make excellent cars these days.

VW have lifted them well away from their earlier reputation.

I still wouldn't buy one though. It's that name.

Am I being ridiculous?

Quite probably.
Crazy isn't it how a bad reputation can linger for so many years. Skodas have Excellent build quality, reliability and are very good value but I, like you, could never really own one.

They are an excellent car. But ... me neither.
The reason for rear heated windscreens?
To keep your hands warm while you push them.
Doc, same engine as my 10 year old Seat Toledo. 185000 miles and still going strong!
I had a Fabia VRS Bought from new and kept for 5 years. BEST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED!! EVEN Jeremy clarkson ranted on at how much power and torque it had. Ride, build, development. Unbeatable quality. Yes the name caused a few sniggers with friends but after ALL of them either drove or had a ride in it they ALL changed there minds. Stigma sticks, quality just gets better. The new skoda yeti, well it begs to differ what that will do.
It has,nt worried some police forces,in the UK.They have bought Skodas for local and traffic patrols.
I've had a Skoda Fabia Ambiente for 6 years & I love it, bestist car ever.Ron.

I know GM changed the name of Daewoo to Chevrolet.

Perhaps VW should buy the Lancia or Alfa Romeo name and use that instead of Skoda.

I would buy one then.
Skoda used to BE a Skoda.
Now they are a VAG car ... like VW, Audi .. etc.
Get over the name .. and you've cracked it!

Sorry, I just can't.
Some say they're VWs for poor people. I think they're VWs for people with more sense than money. I was looking for an Octavia, really liked them after borrowing a friend's, but the local dealer never got back to me with a trade in price for my existing car, or even follow up on my interest in the 2 year old example I viewed. So I ended up with a Vectra from a more obliging dealer but it has been far from reliable. Shame as it's really nice to drive but I think that when I can afford to change it I'll get an Octavia..
It's like Ladas used to be - we had a Lada 4WD years ago, it was brilliant.
Ah, is that what happened to Daewoo ??? Never knew that...thought they had died a death.
I had a Daewoo combination oven - when it broke, the after sales care was rubbish.
My boss has two Octavia estates, one for work (and I mean work) which he does his best to try and kill and a newer shiny one for weekends. Both beat his partner's Golf hands down.
Thoroughly reliable cars. We've had two and had no probs apart from the jokes.
We can live with that. There used to be that joke what do you call a skoda at the
top of a hill? Answer:- A miracle. We travelled all over the Lake District in ours, even
up scafell pike. Other models of car were getting stuck halfway up, ours didn't!!!!
Straight up to the top, no problems at all.
In various places where normal saloon cars are used as taxis the Octavia seems to be popular.
I had a Favorit just after VW bought Skoda, so the design was a bit clunky and 'old European' but you can't fault the cost and reliability.

It depends how much you worry about what other people think about the car you drive, which says more about you than about Skoda.

Speaking as someone who couldn't care less what people think - I would have another one tomorrow.
