If its only late payments, ie not registered as default or judgment, you should be ok once your payments are back up to date and have been made on time for a few months.  Most lenders register the last few months' worth of payments with the credit reference agencies.  It would probably not be worth applying for credit soon after the late payments as it would be showing up as a current/very recent problem, but once the payments have been made regularly on time for a few months this will be reflected in the report.

Most credit card companies offer direct debit facilities whereby the minimum amount payable is automatically taken from your bank account each month and you are left to decide whether you wish to make an additional payment. If you sign up for this, it will indicate that you intend to keep your payments up to date in future and may, therefore, help your credit rating.
