So what did we think of Tess of the d'Urbervilles?

It's my favouriote novel, so I was glued to it - but I thought it wasn't as good as the previous BBC version with justine Waddell in the title role.
But that's the "Pride and Prejudice" effect at work - when a definitive version is made it is just about impossible to better it. The photography was brilliant but I thought it was miscast - a 7 foot tall botox-lipped Bond girl playing Tess? Nah . . . . . .

Slightly disappointing - I far preferred the 1979 version with Natassia Kinski as Tess.

I thought Gemma Aterton was good, but the last episode was very flat.

I did try and watch it, but the acting was too wooden, the Dorset accent dreadful and the actor who played Angel was too gormless for words, reminding me of John Boy Walton!
The film "The Woodlanders" was on late this afternoon and showed how a Hardy novel should be portrayed. Quite brilliant.
