"No, the plane wasn't named American Pie. It only had serial numbers, N3794N" according to http://www.fiftiesweb.com/crash.htm
American Pie is a phrase Don Mclean used to describe the American way of life. As in the whole "Mama's Apple Pie" way of life! It was meant to symbolise what Buddy Holly meant and how the Americans took him into their hearts and homes.
No, it wasn't named American Pie. There is an article about that on www.snopes.com, a major myth-debunking Website.
