Old Film/Drama

I remember watching a drama on BBC a few years back now (early 80s) about a young boy (farmhand) who worked on a farm, it was set in the early 1900s i think and a very hard job he had too to keep the farm going - the farmer was a tight, mean man who treated this young lad really badly, and during the film one scene that stands out is that the young boy developed really sore hands, especially his knuckles that were red raw, and he was in so much pain the farmer's wife took pity on him and to make his hands feel better she scrubbed them really hard to clean them and then bandaged them up and the boy slept and the next morning his hands were so much better! Also I remember a sheepdog having to be shot as it was useless due to its old age and the boy cried at seeing this dog shot. I cannot remember the name of the film and its driving me nuts as I watched it lots of times !
