We wear overcoats.  I'd call those huge garments that look like repurposed duvets overcoats - I see a lot of people swallowed up by them.

barry - I mean the traditional tailored overcoats - often double-breasted. And often with a deep V at the neck, so not great for keeping you warm.

I've got 2

Deep v,thats what scarves are for !

I wear a topcoat in the winter on the occasions I wear a suit, I have a camel one and a black one.  I have a pea coat for more casual wear, that's double breasted with a V neck.

I also have a traditional Burberry for the rain.   Most of my clothes are classic cut.

My wife has a variety of coats, mainly classic.

as I said - don't see people around here wearing them

Maybe you don't live near me

no

I stopped when I had to let my valet go.

Do you spend much time in a city centre, dave?  Go anywhere near a law court at lunchtime and you'll probably see a few traditional overcoats.

Used to see a lot of vagrants and hippy types wearing great coats a few decades ago, not so much now.

It's probably the car that has killed off the traditional coat.  Even in very cold weather I see men wearing shorts and women without a coat in our local shopping mall (dreadful word) and supermarket.  Out of centrally heated house, in to warm car, quick dash to warm shop.

Confession to make, I rarely wear my big overcoats in Spain, i normally wear em when visiting blighty!

My expat relatives living in mainland Spain really feel the cold in the Spanish winters.  When we visit we are wearing summer clothes and they are wrapped up - I suppose the difference between summer and winter temperatures is great and they feel it.   The Spanish are also wearing winter coats, especially the older ones.

Dirty old men wear them

Do they?

I wear a Pea Jacket (aka reefer jacket) in the car in Winter I also wear a camel duffel coat when tottering around and if peeing it down  totally waterproof Tweed type Barber jacket ( quilt lined). You certainly feel the cold on blood thinners in Winter.

:-(

Well I do Barry 🤣

It's down to fashion naturally but also affordability.

Many of us go to a supermarket or reasonably priced chain store for a new coat.  Unless you can get one in a charity shop or in the sale at a department store, I imagine a tailored coat would be beyond most people's means now.

Yes it's mostly royalty, lawyers and older actors who wear them.

i would imagine royals probably spend more time outside while working than their peers.  having to line up and shale people's hands

no -  ay do

woollen,c scarf, and wooly gloves - as one drug dealer  commented: we all know who you are. I always have a yellow labrador with a "I am not  his " look on her face
