This has been brought up before and nothing happened then. I'm not sure they can stop the crowd singing it anyway so I suspect, as before, nothing will change.

It’s the constant kow-towing that’s so silly
Oh dear. Will I have to cancel the choice of hymn for my funeral service? 'Going Home' was sung by my father when he was a member of the Porthcawl Male Voice Choir. We played it at his funeral in London and I hoped it would cause no offence when played at mine. In this day and age 'Some Hope'.
Silly ruggers.
I quite agree Bobbisox, but I am sure the ordinary spectators will not kowtow and will continue to sing as before.

Yes , you’re right Margarettom
I said this song had racist overtones years ago and was told to stop talking rubbish.
//"We need to do more to achieve diversity," an RFU spokesperson said.//

And quite how will the banning of a popular song achieve that? What utter drivel.

Apparently it was written by somebody who had been enslaved in the USA. So how does that make it unacceptable?

Anyway, good luck to the authorities if they try to prevent rugby fans singing their chosen song.
Probably one of the least racist sports in the UK imo.
sorry..................................................and the world
well if they mess with that they'll guarantee it's belted out continuously. Get a grip!
// The song enjoyed a resurgence during the 1960s Civil Rights struggle and the folk revival; it was performed by a number of artists. Perhaps the most famous performance during this period was that by Joan Baez during the legendary 1969 Woodstock festival. //

So a Classic civil rights song is now taboo. The world has gone mad.
""We need to do more to achieve diversity," an RFU spokesperson said." - rugby is already the most diverse sport there is, the guy's a plonker, needs the old tin tack if you ask me.
using a song written by a slave is surely showing nothing but respect. This is getting silly.
well as long as the Jocks don't sing it......
I always thought the ‘chariots’ nickname for Martin Offiah was very funny.
Offiah, an England player of Nigerian parentage was first serenaded with ‘Sweet Chariot’ by the Twickenham England fans in 1987.

To make any racist motive from the singing of this song is barmy, and obviously counter productive to genuine racism concerns.
They don't seem to have thought this through do they?

This is a song about freedom and deliverance, it is perfect for our time.
gromit: "To make any racist motive from the singing of this song is barmy, and obviously counter productive to genuine racism concerns. " - lot of it about at the moment Gromit, no lunacy would suprise me at the moment.
hang on, that Flu-err of Scoortlin is a bit racist isn't?
What complete tosh. Considering it was written by a black slave, couldn't its use almost be considered a tribute to its composer?
