I-Phone / Macbook Photo Deletion Problem

I was hurriedly deleting lots of photos from my iPhone 4S before my grand-daughter's birthday party. i eventually realised that a faint notice kept popping up to warn me that the photos would also be deleted from my Photo Stream on all devices.
If I plug my phone in to download the party photos to my old Macbook's iPhoto, will it delete previously downloaded photos?
They are all on my back up drive too. Is that safe to plug in?
Help will be enormously appreciated!
