And rebuild and rehouse.
Yes. We get taxed into oblivion all our lives, so why shouldn't we expect proper flood defences?
YES
Only if they can conclusively prove that the situation was caused by lack of dredging.
And now is the time to use some of the overseas aid fund to help our own country.

Well said, Sir P.
UK is always there to help other countries when problems arise.

Who is now queuing up to help the UK?
we the tax payers pays not the government thats where their money comes from ?
Haven't we given a commitment to give a certain amount of overseas aid? I think we'd lose even more of our credibility as a leading nation if we reneged on the deal. The situation is dreadful to those affected by the floods but don't really compare to major famine and disasters such as war, earthquakes and tsunamis in overseas countries. Besides, our aid is also a way of securing contracts overseas and making sure we have influence in other countries
Try saying that in, for example, Somerset right now FF
what about insurance?
yes they should, they seem to have funds to give away to plenty of other countries, why not our own? I someone starts a petition I will willingly sign.
Absolutely not!
Aid and compensation are two different things though. The Op was about compensation.
i was flooded in 2007, whitehaven was flooded several times in recent years, loads of flooding recently on the east coast, when there was that huge tidal surge. Were those people compensated by the government? No.

No, as it would start very dangerous precedent. The floods are a natural disaster an 'act of God' Dredging is just a 'scapegoat' even if they had trebled the water flow to the rivers it would not have made a difference, there is 10s or even 100s of times more water than the rivers can handle. If we compensate them then it sets the precedent for any one affected by a natural disaster to expect compensation. House struck by lightning, roof blown off in a gale?, they would all be holding out their hands for compensation.
You live on a flood plain and we get the highest rainfall for 200 years, what do you expect? They have had over a years rainfall in a month who could expect that?
