Never seen it ,Naomi. It is obviously worth watching though. I used to like E.R. Is it similar?

Tilly, I've never seen ER so I can't say. Grey's is a drama set in a US hospital - and best watched from episode 1 series 1 - in my opinion - although I expect you could jump in anywhere really and just accept you don't know the history of the characters. I've just bought the box set of the first six series for a friend who's never seen it. (I think it's six).
