I vaguely remember something about Gary saving the life of Clement Attlee which proved to be the reason he was there so the time gate closed.

And there was a ridiculous bit where Gary, realising he couldn't get back, wrote a message on the wall of his flat in his time which magically appeared in the same flat Ron was decorating in the future, asking him to tell Yvonne everything.
