Just taken my neighbour to Aldi, we each bought two packs of paracetamol. Assistant refused to serve me because we were together even though it would have been two separate transactions. "It is illegal to buy that many, you are breaking the law".

The law clearly states the maximum is per transaction. Grrrrrr.

Rant over, as you were

You weren't trying to pay with a £50 fished from your bra, were you?

Ewwww, I would refuse to accept money kept in close contact with any part of a body, grubby hands are bad enough.
shoulda gone to separate tills?
Correct, Dave.
You should have complained to the manager.
Question Author
Yes, we should have, Dave. We were using self check out and she had to come to authorise my purchase of paracetamol when she saw my neighbour had two packs in her hand.
In the past I've been to our small Sainsbury's, bought my limit, walked round the shop again and bought more, and again. Same check out operative.
I went into Tescos a few weeks back to get some Oil of Cloves. I wanted a bottle for myself and one for my neighbour who had given me some when I had toothache the previous Sunday night.

Apparently, it is also against the law to sell 2 bottles of that stuff.
Question Author
Ha! Then she, the blerdy woman, came chasing after me in the car park yelling at me that I hadn't paid for the shopping.
I used my credit card, it said 'authorised' and I walked out. Sure enough it was still on the screen and when she pressed buttons it was clear there was a terminal error, I hadn't tried to shoplift.

I did tell her quietly never to yell at me again.
So you called the manager over ?
Question Author
Barmaid, Chemist4U will let me buy 10 bottles of the stuff. More training needed
Question Author
No, I didn't, OG, I walked out in high dudgeon. That'll show em
You should leave in low dudgeon, it's far less tiring.
Question Author
Good point.
The law on the purchase of these items is unworkable. There is nothing to prevent you visiting a dozen places where they are sold and buying one at each store.
I didn't know Aldis had self checkouts. It's one reason why I liked them!
I think the idea was to stop people buying enough for suicide on an impulse buy; making them go six times round the shop is deemed to be a deterrent.
The actual legal limit is 100 tablets per transaction. The two-pack limit in shops is only guidance from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, with some stores (notably Poundland) having faced much criticism in the past for simply ignoring it.
Just out of curiosity, how many Paracetomol do you need to commit suicide?
^ a handfull...then monitor the situation.
Thanks Gingejbee, great Sqad impression!
