This morning. 4.35am, land line started ringing. I ran downstairs in a staggered, dreamy state to then miss the call. 1471 showed it was a number with a local dialling code (phone number I did not recognise). I wracked my brains, couldn't think. Asked hubby. Same. Tried to get back to sleep. Then got back up as my mind was racing - to check my address book - but to no avail. Decided to do 1471(3), immediately it rang then an answermachine message came in saying "the call that you have just received was for sales and marketing, we may or may not call you back". FURIOUS I was. AND......before anyone mentions it we have already twice done that call barring thing that's meant to stop these calls from getting through. I honestly thought someone had taken seriously ill when I heard it ringing at that time in the morning, there is quite literally no excuse for it. I honestly can't believe they would stoop so low?!?
What if that's been my poorly granny hurrying downstairs to answer or my elderly aunt on her walking sticks. Disgusting.

agree...are you BT..you can complain to them if you have the number..if you are tps registered this should not be happening...

Yip with BT, Going to call home and get hubby to jot it down.
I think there are a several problems unfortunately:
- TPS is only a voluntary arrangement
- I don't thin it applies to calls from overseas
- we sometimes inadvertently agree to receive such calls by ticking/not ticking the relevant box on surveys/guarantees/email forms etc
This was a local number factor...BT will follow up a complaint for you if you are registered..quite right overseas can't be stopped !!

Yes Factor I agree with you. Still doesn't make it right though does it. You'd think in this dya and age a governing body would be able to take over these companies electronicaly and "mass-bar" them all from doing these things. Was very stressful at that time in the morning, and I am young. Would hate it to happen to someone older in our family or something like that
Here is an extract from Money Box on Radio 4 last Saturday which sadly shows that little in practice is done.

"If you are registered with the TPS, and receive a cold call, you can complain to the TPS who will do a first round of investigations and pass the company's details on to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO).

But the ICO has not been doing enough to stop rogue companies, according to Mr Mitchison:

"They haven't made any serious enforcement action for quite some time. At the beginning of this year, the ICO were given increased powers.

"They can now enforce a civil monetary penalty of £500,000, but they haven't done anything in the area of the TPS as yet.

"It's very frustrating. We obviously receive a huge number of complaints each month and we receive telephone calls from people that are being deluged by this type of call - particularly in the area of PPI and accident claims."

Ofcom figures show that complaints about cold calls trebled in the first half of this year, with nearly 10,000 complaints lodged in July alone."

Thanks guys.
If you Goole the number you might be able to find the name of the company.

You could then fire off a complant letter.

Alternatively, in the light of another man's recent success, you could bill them for your time and take them to the small claims court.
Oops,

GooGle ... complaint
Sorry- I was too busy typing to see your last post,
I certainly agree with you- I'm fed up of receiving calls myself telling me I can write off my credit card debts/get £3400 for my accident/win £3200 PPi payments/ I can get solar panels.
I totally agree it is wrong. I'm not supporting it- I was just trying to point out that as things stand at present this will continue unfortunately.
Yes, you have to admire the guy that took them on, don't you Hopkirk.
I think though that the vast majority of us will not be able to do what he did. He had the technology to record the calls and knowledge of how these companies work. For most of us we'd struggle to get to the bottom of who was responsible and which address to send our bills to or who to make a civil claim against.
Don't ignore it, report it Frilly.
