Saw a great production of this opera at Covent Garden with John Tomlinson and Thomas Allen. Had never seen it before and didn't really know what to expect, but managed to get a day seat and was very pleasantly surprised, especially with the opening scene which (I think I'm right in saying) is of a beautiful hymn being sung by the villagers. I can remember Thomas Allen's 'fanget an' - a very funny performance.

Should take our minds off the bleeping election - I've had enough now!

Goalie....I saw the same production, in October 1993 !
Yes, very impressive and very funny.

I also saw a production at the Coliseum, in 1989. This was also wonderful, with Gwynne Howell as Sachs.

Equally as good as the Covent Garden show...may be better !
