What I find very worrying in this case, is that this chap had a string of convictions for child sex abuse but still managed to get a job at the BBC, where he may have been in contact with children. I'm not sure how recently he was working at the BBC.

Couldn't agree more. but being a public corporation it will be whitwashed over with some lame excuse.

This is rather worrying too!

//A previous attempt to track down Smith in 2002 had failed when police could not find him - even though he was in prison at the time. //

Prison would seem to be a good place to hide from the Plods ...You couldn't make it up ymg !
The vile act he was accused of was 29 years ago - I suspect that drivers for the bbc were not checked to that level at that time - he may have worked for the bbc for several years going back to 70's and got the job on who he was friendly with!
It's quite clear that back in saville's day there was a peadophile ring acting within the bbc.

Find it difficult to argue with you there doctorb.
Sad to say mikey, but I also think the ring received a level of protection from some within the police.
DoctorB, seems hard to understand how it could operate so prolifically without 'assistance' from the old bill, even it the assistance was 'just' turning a blind eye.

one man and his driver doesn't constitute a ring. I can't imagine drivers (for anyone, not just the BBC) underwent CRB checks 30 years ago - in fact, I'm not sure they'd do so now.
Jno, surely you don't believe that saville could have been so brazenly prolific without the help of others.

It has been said that there wasn't a Policeman in Leeds that wasn't aware of Savile's activities. There is also evidence that lots of people at the BBC were perfectly aware of what Savile was up to, over many years, but they decided to stay quite about.

Just what was it about Savile that inspired such fear and/or loyalty ? Even if you take into account the eye-watering amounts of money that this loathsome person raised for charities, I find it hard to understand why it took a year after his almost state funeral, for the truth to come out. The truth which is still appearing anew almost very day it would seem.

No connection has been shown, as yet, between David Smith and Savile, apart from the fact that they both worked for the same employer. But I just wish somebody could explain this Savile effect.
Bob Harris has said during interview that he knew what saville was up to and so did his colleagues and the establishment at the bbc.
But look at how the public fall at the feet of celebrity, possibly more so nowadays. They become so arrogant they think they can behave with impunity, which was true in Saville's case.
Apparently he drove for the BBC for a 'few years' in the 1980s, but not Saville.

Blackiequine. I agree with you up to a certain point. But Savile's activities were vile...it wasn't just a bit of slap and tickle with one of Pans People. Very young children were involved. I still don't really understand how the scale of it went unreported over nearly 50 years.
mikey, there are degrees of culpability: those who acted illegally, those who assisted in it, those who knew about it, those who heard about it, those who suspected it. And of course those who said 30 years later that they'd known there was something fishy about him all along.

Only the first, and possibly the second, could constitute a ring.

As for the rest, I don't recall hearing anything to prove anyone was covering up for him. Some of the investigationw as lackadaisical - but a lot of investigations are like that.
oh yes, you're right, hc4361. I was sure I'd read somewhere he actually drove Savile.

So even less of a ring, then. Just a lone paedophile (unless there's anything else I've missed). It looks as though taking the boy to White City was the only actual link between the offence and the BBC, and seemingly a tenuous one.
ah, right, I was confusing them. Thanks, hc4361.
