Star Wars Bad Continuity??

Can anyone explain George Lucas's explanation for why If There is (according to the Star WarsChronology) that if there is only 36 years between the events of Phantom Menace and Return of the Jedi. Why did he cast a 10 year old boy (Jake LLoyd) to play Anakin Skywalker in Phantom Menace and a 78 year old man (Sebastian Shaw) to play him in Return of the Jedi. Does anybody think that this has any bearing on Lucas' decision to superimpose Haydn Christiansen's image over Shaw's in the latest DVD reissue of Return of the Jedi in the scene where Luke looks out towards the Ghost's of Obi Wan, Anakin & Yoda at the end of the film.

It all happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, so you have to remember that they were not human. Whichever species of life it was, it probably had a different rate of ageing.

Doofus has an explanation? I thought we were just supposed to accept everything without question!

I think it's fairly obvious that Lucas never had any plans for his saga beyond "Star Wars" until that movie hit big and he decided that it was the 4th in a 9 (or in some stories, 12) movie saga. By the time he had got around to starting the prequel trilogy, I think that he may have felt that he might have to hand the reins over to someone else if he was to make a sequel trilogy, so announced that there would only be 6 movies, and it would all make sense. The success of the prequels seems to have changed his mind, as there are rumblings of Episodes 7 to 9. Maybe Episode 3 will explain all of the continuity glitches, but I'm betting it won't.

There's loads of continuity problems e.g. In Episode IV when Obi-Wan 1st meets R2D2 he says he doesn't rememebr owning any droids despite hanging around with R2 for much of Epsiode I & II; Han Solo has a chat with Jabba the Hut in Ep IV (the remastered version) yet in Ep VI he's forgotten Jabba's language & C3PO has to translate for him. If you've ever got a spare couple of hours search for Star Wars Bloopers in Google... Personally I reckon he changed Darth Vader's image in Ep VI for 2 reasons: 1 - it makes the DVD collections a little more consistent; 2 - it helps explain away the original problem of only being able to see the 'ghosts' of the Jedi's that were mates of Luke (in theory the Emperor should also have been hanging around in Force Cyber-space causing problems for Yoda et al). By changing Darth Vader's image back to Anakin it implies that only those on the good side of the force achieve immortality
