Camcorder Help

I have been given a Sony Digicam DCR-TRV145E Camera. When I turned it on both the viewfinder and the LCD screen are blank. The menu comes up on the screen/viewfinder, as does the previously recorded tape, but as I said in record mode the screen/viewfinder are blank...oh and yes I have removed the lens cap....lol.
Any help appreciated.
