spelling mistakes

In recent years an american newspaper suddenly and for no apparent reason, started making spelling mistakes. There was no change in staff or duties. The errors were not caused by machinery,technical changes or methodology. Most matters remained the same.It was not done on purpose. Later on they apologized and gave the explanation for the mistakes. What was it?

The mistakes were not deliberate. Also staff remained the same. The errors appeared all of a sudden.
