Jerry Morton, the 'Coronation Street' character played by Michael Starke, seems to have been unpopular from the beginning. In fact, the whole Morton clan are to be axed from the soap before the end of the year.
Ken Hopkirk in 'The Royal' seems to have been a general favourite. Why did Michael Starke succeed in one soap and not in the other?
I agree with Suzyboo that it was down to the writing. They seemed to be trying that trick of introducing edgy characters to stir things up and then try to make them sympthetic.in this case it didn't work. And brinhging in his ex-wife was the last nail in their coffin.
Really glad to see that the Mortons are being axed. They just didn't 'gel' into Corrie. No reflection here on the actors,
Hopefully the Corrie team will learn by their recent mistakes with storylines etc. and Corrie will begin to get back to being the excellent soap it has always been until recent times.
The best thing they have recently done has been to make 'Becky' such a prominent character. Well done Corrie.
Yes, it's a shame Micheal Starke wasn't given a better part...without his family. Although an actor's personality plays a part, it's obviously down to the writers to use that & not squash them into some dull part just because they were popular before & hopefully will be again.
I was amazed how great Karl Davies (?) is as Lyle, the sidekick to Stephen Fry in Kingdom, he was nothing exceptional as Robert Sugden in Emmerdale.
LoftyLottie, talking of Michelle....please don't ;o)
I'd like to see the back of Michelle & Carla. I didn't like the character Danny Baldwin, when he was in charge of the factory, but surely he'd be preferable to Carla & Tony? I think I've read somewhere that the two bookies (isn't one of them called Harry?) are also to be axed.
I like Michelle and Carla, but for some unknown reason, I did not like the Mortons. They were a step up from the Battersbys and had no character. The only good one is the ex wife who has turned up, livening up things.
The Morton girls are useless and don't get me started on that lay about son of theirs.
