Does anyone remember a programme from the mid 80's simiilar to 'tales of the unexpected' featuring one episode where prunella scales kills her husband by locking him in a sauna, and another featured a murderous little girl (in a painting) with a scythe. The opening credits featured a child like animation of a wilting vase of flowers. HELP!

IMDB seems like a good place to start, here's a list of films and TV series she has been in http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0768795/ there's not to much further info about her mid eighties tv stuff but gives you a place to start
It reminds me of a series called Hammer house of Horror it was on in the seventies and it was recreated in the eighties they were short gory stories of the humourous type but I can't say I remember the girl with the vase of flowers.
Could be the Hammer T.V. Series. There was a Hammer House of Horror series and a Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense series. Here is a link to a relevent site:

Also I seem to recall a series on ITV called armchair thrillers or something similar ??
It's not Hammer House of Horror as i have the complete series on dvd & that story is not featured.
Would it be Roald Dahl's Tales of the Unexpected??
The series you're looking for was called "Unnatural Causes" (ITV/1986) - 7 episdoes in all about death and murder.

The epsiode you describe was called "Home Cooking"
