Or do you mean the Sensurround as used in "Earthquake"?This caused the rumble experience in the cinema . (no pun intended).
I remember going to see Quo Vadis back in 1951, and during the crucifixion scene, the sound of the thunder claps seem to come from all around you. Whether this was an early surround sound, or an experiment in sound to heighten one's viewing experience, just as they tried 3D, because the sound track is down as mono.
The sound of music is in surround sound.
Back in the day the 35mm reels had 3 audio tracks. Stereo left and right and one at the back. I think to find out the facts its worth typing in '1st quadrophonic movie'.
