Who was the lead in a 1970's (?) movie about an American going to Scotland to do some studies about the tides? I keep thinking it's something like Paul Reisner, Rob Ryder, Riner, Reiner. Can't seem to get it right. IMDB.com didn't help. Thank you

Not sure about the actual film, but sounds like you're trying to find Paul Reiser - see http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001663/
I think I know the film you mean, and the actor was someone like Rod Taylor.

I could be completely wrong.

There was a Bill Forsyth film ( early 80's) about Americans coming to Scotland to take over a village to build a refinery. One of the American actors in it was Peter Riegart.
Again, you can find it on IMDB.
Sorry, Meant to say the film was called 'Local Hero'
Yip - that was Local Hero
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0085859/

local hero was filmed in a small place north scotland called pennan lovely place the red telephone box is still there
Wild Theme the score from Local Hero (Mark Knopfler - Award) always gives me goose bumps when I play it!!

Local Hero is such a beautiful subtle film, it's worth the time spent to watch it. Much in the same way as The Straight Story.
He also played Boon in Animal House.
