The villain is not always British. He is invariably English.

oh well ward~minter at least you tried!

anyone else?

It's probably because we English are big enough and secure enough in our self esteem not to whine and whinge if we are prtrayed in a poor light in films. It also keeps our actors employed, so that's a bonus.

Americans do enjoy portraying Americans as the beautiful people on film, but believe me, they are an incredibly fat and unhealthy looking lot away from the silver screen and Hollywood. They are a lot nicer than they're given credit for though and I do like them.

Awww good 'ol Alan Rickman - heh! Ya know when he's in a film that he'll be the baddie.

I think it's more to do with the accent more than anything else - a perfect cut glass accent sounds soooooooooo much more evil.

Question Author
oh and keep trying!

OOH BOO,

Alan Rickman in Die Hard, when he said about lying on a beach with the bonds at 4%...seen it a million times but right at this minute cannot think of the exact words...

And WM, as soon as I read the previous thread on AR, I said TMD, will have to reply, but once again you beat me to it!! (I was making coffee).

He was also v e r y n i c e in Emma Thompson's...........my mind has gone completely blank now, will have to come back...also starred Kate Winslet

Perhaps its because they had to kick us out of America to get independance.

To the average Yank we ARE the baddies!

Sean Bean is almost always a baddie in Hollywood films too

It's become a bit of a cliche hasn't it. Yes, you always know Sean Bean is going to be a baddie if he turns up in an American film. Ian McKellan, Alan Rickman, Jeremy Irons, David Thewlis, Joss Ackland, all that lot. I think it's actually a back-handed complement. I think the baddy tends to be the role with the best lines and - particularly in action films - has to be played straight for the American hero to bounce wisecracks off. So they go for a Brit actor because they've got that "proper" stage acting gravitas that American screen actors don't have.

Other than that, the only reason is racism.
Drusilla1S is actually very close to the truth. A famous Hollywood director (I forget which one) was once asked this very question - why do so many Hollywood films have British villains? His answer was something along the lines of "because you guys are the only ones who don't complain".

I guess you could call that a backhanded compliment :-)

20%. But I can't recall the rest of the quote, either. Something about: ",,,they'll spend hours sifting through the rubble. In the meantime, we'll be on a beach in (?) earning 20%." Or something like that. Great villain. Still a woofter, though!
