they arrested some guys for robbing a bookies which led them to a hotel room. in which was sams dad who they arrested but released coz he hadn't done nething wrong. as the episode went on, it became apparent sams dad was involved in some porn producing racket with a couple of local gangsters. the depth of his inolvement wasn't really revealed tho. anyways, sam was trying to make his dad stay with his mum and young him as the thought that that would bring him out his coma.

he also stopped his dad from beating up/killing the lady police officer, annie?, in some woods when she followed him, an act he had witnessed as a child before his dad did a bunk.

he didn't come out of his coma tho, he went to the pub instead :o)

I understood it (though I may be wrong) that Sams Dad actually WAS the gangsters (there were supposed to be two of them, but no-one actually saw them or knew who they were). He seems to have been a bit of a bad 'un, actually killing two blokes in a snooker club and pointing a gun and pulling the trigger on Sam, who luckily had taken the bullets out first. Brilliant series - if he hasn't made it out of his coma (I thought that there was a possibility that he would make it out after he'd been down the pub in 1973) then I'll really look forward to a second series.
Sam was trying to change history by persuading his father to stay with yound Sam, instead of abandoning him and his mother. The twist at the end was that he discovered that his father had actually committed a murder, and told him to go and disappear so that the rest of his family would be safe. So the whole "purpose" seems to be that it was Sam's job to persuade his father to disappear (to avoid going to prison, and to avoid being killed by the other gangsters) rather than to persuade him to stay.

There were a few of the usual bits of Sam hearing noises from the 2006 hospital bed, but nothing in the end happened to make him wake up and go back to 2006 - so at the moment he is still stuck in 1973.

By the way, I only watched the final episode (ep. 8) yesterday, but I have caught up on the repeats of episodes 1 and 2 which have been shown on Monday night / Tuesday morning at c. 1:20am during the sign-language slot. So the repeat of the final episode should come round again in about 6 weeks' time.
