This was the first 'serious' April Fools, I remember.

Question Author

The Spaghetti one was 1957.

There's the absolute classic that's been around for centuries where a dead guy comes back to life as the Easter Bunny.

Or something.

San Serriffe and spaghetti are the only ones I remember; I'd been told both were hoaxes before I actually saw them but I still admired their thoroughness and plausibility.

I remember the one where the Big Ben clock was going to be converted to digital.

Odd how one's memory can be flawed.  I well remember the spaghetti tree, but I could have sworn it was Richard Dimbleby on Panorama. Your video clip shows up my mis-remembering. Duh!

^The "spaghetti harvest" WAS Richard Dimbleby on Panorama...that's him voicing the clip.

Question Author

It was done in 1957 and featured on many shows later, I remember it on Nationwide but it was no doubt on many different shows over the years. Yes it seems it was originally on Panorama: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spaghetti-tree_hoax

I remember the Spaghetti hoax. There was another April Fools hoax by Nationwide when they reported that they'd found a secret laboratory in London that was recreating dinosaurs, and they showed film of what they said were baby dinosaurs roaming the enclosed grounds, with lots of raw meat lying around the place. It must be true!

^^^ I think it was in the late 70's ^^^

I think it was 'Thats Life' showing the new born Lipra Loof at london zoo

Thanks TTT.  I was only 6 and it fooled me completely. :)

I also remember the Lirpa Loof. It was coloured purple, wasn't it? But the dinosaur one was definitely a Nationwide item.

BMW ran an ad in the papers saying that if your car badge showed the blue quarters a certain way it was a faked copy car.

(of course the "wrong" badge was in fact just the normal badge)

Yes, I remember that one dave. They said that if you see the badge with the blue quarters rotated through 90 deg, then it's a fake!
