Just watched "The Chase" - it struck me, why would you go on a quiz show when you know nothing, unless you don't know you know nothing?

If you didn't live through the war, or was born close enough for it not to be taught in school as history, why would you commit historic dates such as the war years to memory ?

It is perfectly possible nerves cut in when the cameras are pointed at you and you can't get you brain to recall the stuff you do know, quickly.

It's a matter of luck with your questions. The people who apply for these shows must have watched them in the past and thought they'd do quite well if they could get on.
If I was a contestant faced with questions about pop music or sport I'd be unable to do more than guess.

" - for the last 25 years the schools have been brainwashing the kids to hate TGL so it's no wonder they know nowt about previous history.

In respect of people with little knowledge appearing on the show.Back in the eighties I appeared on "Winner Take All" but the interview to appear on it consisted of among other things answering fifty or so general knowledge questions, thus ensuring that the contestants at some knowledge.

My OH has appeared on a tv quiz show. His downfall was the question "How much does a tv license cost? ". He had no idea.
I saw one on Decimate the other day. Isambard Kingdom Brunel was head engineer on which of these projects? Great Western Railway, Channel Tunnel, [I can't remember the other one]. The contestant said channel tunnel.

I was intrigued a few years ago when they showed part of a "double Your Money" show (1960's?). The £1 (opening) question was something like "name 7 of the Provinces of Canada". Anybody?, without cheating.

Brainwashing crap again?! You were lucky at my school to learn anything about Thatcher at all, or anything else after WW2 for that matter.

I'm getting fairly sick of my generation being written off every time TTT, or NJ or a few others open their mouths about it.

Jim, I'm a bit older than you, but I didn't learn a thing in history lessons at school, and certainly nothing about the previous few decades.

My OH is incredulous that I don't know the order of the reigns of kings and queens. it was drummed into him at school along with county towns of the UK. What's the point unless it's to get a question right in a quiz? I do know the approximate dates of reigns but off the top of my head I couldn't say who came after whom in the 13th century, say. People might say I'm thick for not knowing that.

The question reminds me of some of the contestants on the X Factor? Why do some people go on the show when they can't sing? Or don't they know they can't sing?

a) Marsupial, b) Primate, c) Mammal d) reptile

it was I think the £200 question, she said a)! hence forth known as a marsupial moment!

wiltsman I think they are often deluded into thinking they can sing, usually by their own family. I remember one episode when the dad had a go at Cowel because he knew his little girl had the voice of an angel! Then there was the Welsh bird who claimed she was better than madonna!

She said "well, it can't be primate, because that would be ridiculous [or something similar]".

To quote Tarrent, they're only easy if you know the answer. I've seen questions on Pointless, and others, where not only could I not have answered any, I was no wiser once I heard the answers, and I consider myself generally good with quizzes etc. One of my favourites was "The Suez Canal connects the Red Sea with which other body of water?" Answer, the Thames.
