There was a show in the late 80's or early 90's about an older guy that helped out people in trouble. It seems like he had an English accent. He wore a trench coat I think and was kind of mysterious about how he found out about the people he was helping.

I cant remember the name of the show, but it starred Edward Woodward. If I remember correctly, he wore a beige coloured trench coat.

Just rwemembered the name, the show was called The Equalizer.
The characters name was Callan

Actually, Edward used an American accent in the Equaliser. The character's name was McCall:

Edward Woodward played Robert McCall in an American series called The Equalizer in the mid to late eighties. He was a former spy turned private detective who used to get work generally by adverising himself with a card 'Got a problem? Call the Equalizer!' . I used to love this series and I do remember he was a bit mysterious and indeed wore a long coat and, i think, a trilby.

Loved the way he, when faced with 10 hoods with guns etc, he would just sort of say  'STOP IT!' in a stern voice - and they would!
