Snobody knows.
Define a snob...
OK Yah?
Nah, it makes one a pleb....
If it's inverted snobbery surely it makes one a bons, boxy?
That sounds like something out of Round the Horne, dave :-)
If anyone looks down on anyone else, be it for having tattoos, wearing different clothing, earning less, not being as tidy, not following the same rules or not having the same haircut as you would like you are not welcome in my circle, however, looking down on those people is just as bad. I can be repulsed by a view without feeling superior to it.
Question Author
Craft, good point. Surely a snob is only identified by somebody else - nobody thinks of themself as one.
The general consensus would appear to be that a snob is an upper class twit. However I must admit that when I look at some of today's dregs of society I am a snob.....
Question Author
Craft, I wouldn't define it like that. Snobs can be from all backgrounds, rich and poor, they just try to emulate people they perceive to be better than themselves.
//... they just try to emulate people they perceive to be better than themselves.//

And what, pray, is wrong with that?
perhaps it's not emulating one's betters but disdaining one's inferiors that makes one a snob?
I'm a bit of a snob.
A snob is someone who believes that status equates to human worth.

Therefore, a snob must look down on those perceived as social inferiors.

On that basis, i don't believe that sneeering at snobs makes you a snob - unless you are using the same criteria of judgement - in other words, judging the snob by perceived social status.
My old Mater taught us to treat the maids as though they were dowager duchesses and we wouldn't go far wrong. Civility costs nothing.
Going on what Andy says then I'm not a snob.
Define sneering. Snobs can be found in every walk of like and more importantly every social class. Some of the worst snobs I've met are from working class backgrounds who've made money, the 'Nouveau Riche'
Who cares ? It's a difficult job but someone has to do it.
I despise snobs but have been accused of being one, so not sure. If anyone judges someone on their perceived 'class' etc then it really turns my stomach but I was once not included in something because someone said ' Oh she'd never be interested in coming she's too much of a snob'. The horrible thing was they were right because it was something which I loathe but I still don't think I'm a snob:(
kvalidir, I think 'snob' is sometimes used wrongly to describe someone who has better taste lol! I was once invited to a male stripper thing it sent shudders down me to think some guy was going to shake his whatzit all over in front of screaming women. I was accused of being a snob because I wouldn't go, I don't think I'm a snob in the strictest sense of the word but some things just don't appeal and I do think they are 'common' and some behaviour is 'common' so maybe I am.
