Best film is definitely 'Way out west'.
I'd agree. Many people seem to like Sons of the Desert, but I'd go for Way Out West (Trail of the Lonesome Pine and all that). As for shorts, Laughing Gravy was good, as was the one (name escapes me) where they have to deliver a piano up the flight of stairs from Hell - a simple idea, brilliantly done.

Short film it has to be 'the music box'

I would pick blockheads as best film.

Agree with littleoldme with the piano up the flight of stairs, it was a classic.

My best however would have to be "Towed in a hole" where they are trying to do up a boat so they can catch their own fish and cut out the middleman.

For me this is the comedy of the twentieth century, and probably for the 21st as well.
I'd go for Helpmates. Stan and Ollie have to clean up Ollie's house before his wife comes home. Their attempts are hilarious and end with the house being burnt down.

I can't remember the names but one was about Olie joining the  foreign legion to get over a broken heart, but he took Stan with him.

And all I can remember of the other was Stanley seeing a ghost (Oliver cant see it) and his hair keeps rising up. I wish I could remember the name as it made me laugh till I cried. I am laughing now thinking about it.

Got to agree with brugel on Helpmates.

No votes for Laughing Gravy?

One of my favourites

''as was the one (name escapes me) where they have to deliver a piano up the flight of stairs from Hell - a simple idea, brilliantly done.''

The music box.

As for my favourite L & H film for me it's "Our Relations".Unbeknownst to Stanley and Oliver, their long-lost twin brothers, sailors Alfie and Bert are in town on shore leave carrying a valuable pearl ring entrusted to them by their ship's captain. All four get involved in multiple cases of mistaken identity as a gang of hoodlums try to steal the ring.

As for my favourite L & H short i have a few

"Come Clean" - Stanley and Oliver go out to buy ice cream. On the way, they spot a woman  jump in the river. They save her, only to have her blackmail them into supporting her, or else she'll claim they tried to kill her. Back home, troubles ensue when the boys try to keep their wives from learning what they've brought home instead of ice cream

"Helpmates" is another favourite of mine

Cherrybomb i think the movie you might mean regarding the ghost is called "The Live Ghost" which is another favourite of mine.L & H have to watch one of the sailors who is always drunk and make sure that he will stay on board with them. Of course that doesn't go as planned. The drunken sailor sneaks off the ship & after an accident concerning a gun going off Laurel thinks he has shot the sailor while he was laying in his bed. They throw what they think is the body overboard. However the drunken man returns to the ship but falls into a pool of whitewash & L & H  believe that he has returned from the dead.

never know the name of them but love laurel and hardy. One of my faves is where they buy the boat and Stan gets his head stuck behind the pipe and uses the saw to get out and Ollie gets the paintbrush stuck to his chin and stan has to shave it off with sandpaper. Any one with Mae Busch in... the one where they go away for Ollies health and find liquor instead of water and get Mae Busch drunk.

My own favourites are 'A chump at oxford' as my choice of film, and 'Busy Bodies' as my choice of short. There are so many though.

Towed in a hole - where they buy their own boat.

Also one whose title escapes me, where Stan is sent out to buy ice cream. He asks for vanilla and the guy in the store says "We haven't any vanilla", so Stan phones his wife and she says "Get strawberry" and so on till Stan has used all the ice cream money phoning home. Then the guy behind the counter says "We don't sell ice cream, that's next door". Title please if anyone can remember it.

mydogsandme the title of the L & H short where L & H & Mae Busch get drunk is called "Them Thar Hills" & there is actually a follow up to that short called "Tit For Tat"Stan & Ollie set up their own electrical repair store. Unfortunately, for them, the grocery store opposite is run by the man & wife they encountered with in Them Thar Hills .
I love "Towed in a hole" & "Tit for tat". Superb. My 5 year old boy adores them too!
The film with the ice-cream is Twice Two. As well as playing themselves, Stan plays Ollie's wife and Ollie plays Stan's.

So far it looks as though 'Towed in a hole' is winning in the shorts category, followed by 'The Music Box', both of which are Fantastic. No Film particulary standing out yet.
I loved 'Way out west' but my fave was the one were they were trying to get a piano up or down a flight of steps. Sorry can't remember the name of it.
opps sorry luckboy didn't see your post about the stairs short.

Stan and Ollie are legends. One of my fave shorts is 'going bye bye' at the beginning stan shouts out in court about butch 'aren't ya gonna hang him' then they place an ad in the paper, ollie reads out 'come home nellie all is forgiven' later he takes a glass of milk from stan thinking it's the phone and throws it down his ear. Stan then shreads ollie's jacket with a blade and ollie gets his head stuck in the bed.

I have always loved sons of the dessert from being little, 'honoloulou baby, where dya get those eyes', then they have to sneak home and live in the attic like 'two peas in apod' at the end ollie gets beat with the pots and pans and stan gets told 'honesty is the best policy' after their lies about being shipwrecked.

Classic pair of all time comedians, it's hard to pick the best films.
