How big is your hard drive?
What version of Windows does your laptop run?
Dont bother to delete programs, they are normally very small. There is also a danger you delete something you need.
1) Run Disk Clean up (a Windows option)
2) Turn off System Restore (to delete all the old restore points) and then turn it back on again (or you may be able to delete all old restore points via Disk Clean Up)
3) Turn off hibernation (if it is on)
4) Empty your recycle bin.
5) Delete all your browser temporary files.
If you do those things above it may free up some space.
Windows (plus all its updates and service packs) can be very large. This is particularly a problem with Vista.

One other thing.
Do you know if your hard disk is divided up into partitions?
Some laptop makers split the hard disk into various partitions such as "C" for Windows and your programs, and there may be a "D" for data.
Note that your laptop will also have a letter for your CD/DVD drive - which may be "D" or "E", and there may also be a "recovery" partition as well that wil have drive letter, so it can get a bit confusing.

To get help on things like restore points of hibernation search the Windows help.
Windows does have some very good help and searching for a word like "restore" or "hibernation" will give you easy to understand help about using these features.
If you cant manage it yourself then talk to a friend or relative who may know about computers and may be able to help you.
Something that may take you hours to figure out may take a computer expert minutes.
