Film where actors talk in the third person??

Hi - I'm trying to desperately find out the title of an American film I last saw 15 years ago - a long shot I know!!!
It basically involved a giant "alien" which to all intents and purposes looks human like, apart from the fact it's about 7ft tall ( think his name could be Fred??).
The most striking featureof the film, however, is the fact that the characters, (including two detectives) talk in the third person.
Please help!!!!!!
