What ever happened to Sergeant Troy in the Midsommer Murders? I know he died, but how and was he murdered.?

When did he die?

I watched the last episode he was in & he never died in that 1.In that episode if i remember correctly he was offered a promotion & he took it.Hence the character leaving the series.
