The maximum fine is �1,000 (�2,500 if the offence is racially aggravated).

Magistrates� guidelines suggest a fine of one week�s net income for serious disturbances, or half a week�s net income for less serious offences. Any fine imposed will be reduced by one third in the event of a guilty plea.

A Conditional Discharge is often imposed instead of a fine for less serious offences, particularly if the defendant has no record.
