If my employer is paying only smp do I have to pay this back if I choose not to return back to my job? I was under the impression that I didnt have to until my boss said that I do unless I go back for 2 months!!

no you dont have to pay it back.
Your boss is talking outta his butt. Your boss cannot make you go back for any length of time (unless he pays an enhanced mat package that says you have to or pay the enhanced part back). Even paying and enhanced package, you would not pay back the SMP part

Tell him to go look up your rights with regard to SMP
