I purchased a pair of shorts 3 weeks ago for our holiday and have just noticed that there is 2 threadbare patches on the back of them. Presumably they were there when I bought them but didn't notice. Anyone got any advice about taking them back to the shop as I don't have the receipt fot them??

they are not obliged to having to do anything with the shorts - they need a receipt to work with.
Do they still have the shop tags/label with the price on them? is it from a large store? they could think they were 'shoplifted' so i'd be careful what you do.
you can ask to exchange to another pair or somthing same value if you dont have receipt. but if it is on sale, even you paid for fullprice, you only can get the current price if you dont have receipt. some shops can accept bank statement which can prove how much you paid for it.
When this happened to me last year, I took the item back when the shop was really busy and complained loudly and I mean loudly.
The store didn't want me loudly complaining about the items quality & shoddy service so they gave me a credit note. You most likely woont get a cash refund but with the credit note you can buy a replacement pair.
yeah, most shops will offer you either get voucher or exhange to something same value.
The law says that goods purchased must be fit for purpose, and if they are not, you are entitled , not to an exchange, but to a refund, and you don't necessarily have to produce a receipt. However, in this case you may have a problem. Are the labels still attached, or have you removed them? Since you can't prove a date of purchase, could the worn patches possibly have been caused by wear? The only thing you can do is take the shorts back to the shop and explain the problem. If you get no joy, then tell them you will refer the matter to Trading Standards. You'll find their number listed in the phone book - usually attached to your District Council. They're always very helpful. Good luck.
