You can legally ask but I don't think there is any way that the writer is obligated to show you.

Yes you can, you can ask the prospective employer who has received a reference from your present employer for a copy of that reference under the Data Protection Act.

that isnt correct my understanding is that the author of the reference has to give permission for references to be seen
