Avoid bananas. Keep all fruit and veg in an airtight container. Ensure any older fruit/veg is used or disposed of. It is the smell that attracts them.

are you sure they are fruit flies? if you have a plant in the kitchen and the compost goes sour, that can harbour tiny flies, they are harmless but not nice in the kitchen , you will need to remove the plant and repot it in new soil
