The rules were changed back in 1988. Since then, child maintenance payments have no longer been 'tax deductible'.

Unlike many decisions by Government, that one seems to make sense. A father who is living with his children has to pay for their upbringing out of the earnings which he's paid tax on; it would seem unjust to give a tax perk to a father simply because he no longer lives with his children.
