child booster seats

Can anyone tell me about child booster seats. If you only have lap belts in a vehicle do you still need to use booster seats. I can't seem to get the information anywhere. Please help.

I think for the back seat where you have lap belts you can get a certain type of booster seat. It is higher at the sides and a place to put the lap belt under so that the child and the seat are belted.
