Just came back from a major food store, bought some packaged ham and found a big piece of polyethylene in it. Can I sue the food store?

You sue for compensation for damage suffered. Have you suffered any damages?

Contact your local Environmental Health Officers (at your council) or take it back to the shop for a refund.

I can't see what you would claim for.
How can you claim against the store if it was prepacked?

And isn't it a bit petty? Just throw it away and get on with your life.
I'm with the other two - either take it back and ask for a refund or, if you're in really high dudgeon about what might have happened had you eaten it, then go down the EHO route. Either way, you can't sue for something like that, unless you did yourself some serious damage with the bit of polythene, which you'd have to go to court to prove.

Are you sure the polythene sheet wasn't just in there to keep the slices of ham apart from each other?
Thats the problem these days, people automatically want to sue. Have you contacted the store or the manfacturer to see what they have to say. Mistakes happen and you will find that the majority of companies are very quick to try and sort out your problem, as long as you go about things in the right way. Don't try threatening them with courts and legal action, they will simply turn round and say go on then, and 99 times out of a hundred they will win. Be nice and the worst thing is you'll get the item swapped or refunded. You might get freebies vouchers or more but treat this as a bonus.
For goodness sake what is the world coming to? Ask for a refund and a goodwill gesture and find something more constructive to amuse yourself with.
yeah sue them for 4,000,000, say that it made you all confused, and lost, you cant sleep, and its totally affected your life for the worst.

Im sure any court in the uk would totaly agree with you.

get a life
