I have recently sold my house and have taken a touring caravan to a field I own that has been in my family for many years. On the land are farm buildings where I have been storing some furniture etc for many years.
I intend to obtain planning permisson for the farm building to be converted into a house whilst I live in the Caravan.
The council have now advised me to leave the land within 28 days and remove all of my possessions from the buildings.
The buildings are my own and so is the land.
The caravan is out of sight of any other building so cannot cause an eyesore and is also a touring caravan not a static version.
Is there anything I can do to stop or avoid this unfair action. Thanks in advance.

-Yes, and if anyone knows of or indeed themselves are selling or renting any land we are looking for a good patch in or around sussex areas. We would prefer land with part or full woodland,. Please contact us as soon as possible to discuss further if you can help with us or even point us in the right direction. Have looked long and hard for the last couple of years now and really need to get going with our plans. Feel free to also comment on our blog which is at http://www.sharpsbus.wordpress.com and also our own dedicated bus/mobile livin forum at: http://busbitzuk.proboards.com put all your links, advice and well, everything in there. I'm loving reading all your views and whatnots you know and how things have worked out for you all in your projects and ventures. I've popped by into this particular place at the answerbank before but never stayed as long as this. This 'question' really made me stop to read. This '28 day rule' is very silly though! shouldn't have to be like that should it? And all the PP for this but not that. I would like to know at this point actually where I can find all the information about what rights we have and what laws, rules, byelaws to follow and codes of conduct and blah blah.. and all that malarky that we all have to abide by! anyone know? I've a link for the forestry commission if you want to have a look but u have to contact them to get info. interesting stuff i'm finding out about tho :) link : http://www.forestry.gov.uk/
Hi I know this was a while back but yes I am a widowed woman with a child with adhd, I basically sold my house couldnt afford to live there and bought a twin unit and put it on my land which I now run as a pony rescue centre the council hate it I have an enforcement order - which is now becoming a desperate situation - my planning consultant ballsed up an appeal I have been generally harrassed off the council, the council bloke kept on calling me darling and being smarmy (what the hell was he after) Im not affecting anyone what does it matter ?
Hi I run a small non profit rescue centre and would like some advice, apparently I have had to have had change of use which I have put into the council and they have rejected on the grounds of not enough access but its actually designated by the highways commision as a safe place to turn - also I live down here in a caravan as some need 24 hour care and the council dont wish me to do that and have an eviction order in place I actually own the land and am hoping that someone can help or send me in the right direction - Sarah
i am in the process of buying 4 acres of land in south wales, was hoping to get planning for some stables and sand school and eventually (within 6 months of buying the land) move a touring caravan on to the land and try for planning permission for a log cabin. i have noticed theres gypsies living about half a mile away in touring caravans, however the land is used as part of a business for buying and selling horses. i would be using the land for my own horse, my brood mare (which i would be breeding from) and would also break in horses and sell them as and when i could. would this class as a business? could i use the the fact that i have a very expensive animal there (the brood mare) as a reason to stay on the land and care for her? also does any one know anything about development clawbacks? any help would be really appreciated.
Hi i`m new here and my question is slightly different , i own a property in northumberland , a mill house part of a developement of 9 cottages and mill houses, they are on small plots with small gardens ours however has 4 acres, 2 acres of which is our garden land, not paddocks, garden land which our house looks onto but it also it runs to the left of the property and borders the country road, we want to split this up so this house has its own entrance , looks out onto its own garden and has a small paddock, we then want to apply to put 2 more detatched stone houses set in around 1/2 acre each one will have a small paddock they will have their own gates off the road, the only thing is its set in an area of high landscape value, these houses could be worth a good amount of money and even getting permission and selling it all off could leave us able to buy mortgage free as we are currently struggling through, any thoughts ? thank you
hi all , new on here, great site , i have a 3 acre piece of greenbelt land which has a small building on it about the size of a tripple garage and a small 4 berth caravan which has a certificate of lawfullness for storing animal feed, (we stopped keeping sheep on the land over 20yrs ago but kept the caravan on the land just updating it every few years ,what would be the chances of changing this to a static or its use.
Very very interesting topic indeed! - Not so much an answer but another question if I may :)

I am a hydroponic retailer running hydromarket in the UK.

I would like to purchase some agricultural land to start my own horticulture growing of orchids etc.

But along this, I also would like to carry on retailing my equipment that I source and also plan on manufacturing.

Could I get away with storing my horticultural stock in a building without a base and then running a shop in the local town?

Obviously I wlll need to use my own stock to keep the orchids going but would like to store a large quantity of each for wholesale and retail use also.

therefore a shop in the TC for 1-10 of each item, and a stockpile on my land?

Is this something that could be achieved as buying land to store stock on in a commercial plot is looking at £100k mortgage for just a tiny 0.2 acre plot!

Regards, James Moran. CEO Hydromarket.
Hi all, especially Foggyrossi... My girlfriend and I have an old Mercedes motorhome. We both live in rented accomodation at the moment, but the cost of living is becoming so high that we are having less time and money to enjoy any part of life, as opposed to just existing. I have some money, that was supposed to be for a deposit on a house, but unless we both start to earn at least double what we currently do, there is no way that money (£8000 ish) is enough for that deposit. So, as Foggyrossi is doing, we are thinking of moving into the merc full time. We are in Bristol, and there are plenty of people living in their vans on the highway already, and they don't get hassled. However, we would also like to own a house one day. We would like to build our own, and so would like to find some land, that we can eventually build on, starting off just living in the van, cultivating part of the for veg, and maybe chickens.

I've also heard various radio 4 shows that go on about changes to planning laws giving more power back to the people, but I fail to see how a conservative government could be in favour of such marxist ideals. Does anyone have any up to date advice regarding living in a motorhome on a small plot, with the intention of building a house?

Hi - yes I would be interested in this - what technically constitutes 'living on your land as a permanent residence'. If I worked on my land say 16-18 hours a day, had a seperate PO box/mailing address, kept most/all my personal belongings in a small motorhome and parked it down the road in a layby overnight - would I be breaking the sacrasanct panning laws?

I lived for 6 months in a camper van in the Lakes and go no hassle (went to work weekdays -visited campsites maybe once a week to 'top up batteries/water ec. - moved around a little -didn't visit the same spot for more than 2 days running - no rent to pay/council tax etc. -cheap way to live and save, and a bloody great back garden to boot!

p.s. I should think the real reason for the Consevatives freeing up planning laws, is so their rich mates in the construction industry can go ahead and build on land the previously couldn't i.e, Green Belt - more brick boxes on bloody flood plains probably!

-pisses me off -there are so many narrow minded people in this country that think their way is the only way of living - yet it's screwing eveyone and the planet up! The rule should be live and let live -if your not hurting anyone/causing an annoyance should be able to do what you like on your own land.
I totally agree. Its up to our people power to protect our own souls and defend the true, honest and harmonious way of living with nature. I Love this post, it is inspiring community support that we all so need in these challenging times. It is our birthright to live on the land, there is enough for all of us. We are not obliged to give away our power, our blessed rights, to anyone. Policy men are brainwashed vehicles of the dark forces of fear and greed that are pushed by the few at the "top". They tricked our parents to sign a contract at our birth, signing our rights to "the crown". We were then prescribed a number and became an employee "citizen" of the state. We are "granted" healthcare (dangerous chemical "medicines" that only suppress symptoms, and have endless side effects) and give us services that we could share for free in a community working together. We live in a system of slavery. Those who control the money, control our lives. What is money? Why do we need it? What is fair exchange and who is draining our livelihoods down a bottomless hole because they could afford a pair of scissors and were cunning enough to cut the hole in our pockets. Their "laws" are based on a contract. The only true laws in this country are the common laws. Common law says that both parties must be fully informed of the obligations of the contract when it is made, and this is not possible for a new-born or a child. Contract relies on CONSENT, and you can NOT consent to trespassing on YOUR land. Had you known the contract would oblige you to be forever indebted as a tax slave and treated like the number you are now supposedly consenting to be as a "person", you might not have agreed to this. Keep strong and ignore the letters, these are pathetic attempts to con you into replying and therefore "proving" that you are the number they sent the letter to and consenting to be governed by them and pay them lots of money for the privilage. So we are now reclaiming our Sovereignty and our natural birthrights to be free people and harming no other being. Forming communities based on a pledge to all give our working skills freely. Supporting eachother to stay strong in our truth, to live in harmony with the land. http://www.universalcommunitytrust.net/

Is anyone in Sussex wanting to be part of a community based on Soverignty, interested in sharing skills, land and mutual support?

Love to all the beautiful inspiring people who posted before and those yet to come xx
keep strong, don't consent to their corrupt rule, and pay them for the privilege. Love, Light and Unity is on your side, and the Truth will shine forth into the darkness. Shine your Light, protect your Soul, defend the Truth.

Puh! bang goes my chances of buying a small plot and sticking a caravan/motor home on it. the idea came to me last week, I thought buy a bit of land be a bit self self sufficient, no probs, then i stumbled onto this site! :(
Hi there..I (like everyone else here) am here for the same reasons you all are,,it has become unsustainable in this day and age to rent property from the legalized criminals we call councils/local authorities..as i'm sure you are all aware now the incompetent coalition government (spineless coward criminals) cuts have forced all but the most wealthy into impossible situations in this dirt hole of a country (Rip off Britain)
everything is going through the roof: rent/council tax/fuel/food/mortgages/property/land and living costs in general are just plain criminal.
it is basically exploitation/manipulation of the weak and needy and i am absolutely convinced we will never recover our economy by persecuting and strangling the very people who make up the communities/cities/villages around this (what i choose to call) dictatorship of a country!

i strongly believe that this situation will never get any better and infact is only going to get worse over the next decade,,,the only thing i can see happening here is a civil war within the UK to force the powers that be (legalized criminals) to stop and take notice of the people who employ these spineless unscrupulous government thieves/councilors/mp's from self profiteering and shifting the goalposts to suit their own selfish motives and needs,,,

it amazes me how many times these incompetent/arrogant/ignorant jobsworths have failed the tax paying public costing us billions over years of overspending/bad management/underhanded tactics/lining their own fat pockets whilst their fat pig noses are constantly at the taxpayers trough....

i am incensed and outraged that these scurellous scoundrels are repeatedly rewarded for failure.. yet if any of us were to even do anything remotely similar in our jobs ((not that we would,as we could never sleep at night for the guilt)) we would be sacked/prosecuted/persecuted and ridiculed for our whole lives.

i still suffer now as a result of a few bad decisions when i was a youngster which landed me a criminal record..every job i go for requires a CRB (criminal records check) im now 37 years old and im still persecuted for minor offences and cautions from over 20 years ago yet we have government ministers/mp's/councilors and the like who for decades have been stealing/misusing public funds/speeding in cars/taking drugs and all kinds of behaviors that we would surely be banished and prosecuted for who get to keep and retain their jobs and extortionate salaries and benefits ((not to mention their gold plated pensions..we all pay for!!))...what this country needs is a revolution to put the power firmly back into the hands of the people!!

i have noticed that this thread has had a period of inactivity since November 2012,i just wanted to stir it up a bit and beg you all to keep posting/stand united and support each other after all ((despite the pale face coward prime minister David Cameron's "WE'RE IN THIS TOGETHER" insult)) to the taxpaying public we have to remember this is horse turd "its us, and them"

remember that our/your families are suffering whilst his family (their families) will never know poverty ((and he still had the gall to claim benefits from the state for his disabled son...despite him being a multi millionaire)) yet he discriminates and persecutes the disabled and unemployed calling them scroungers and spewing his crap about a benefits culture of entitlement...what a stinking hypocrite!!

Viva la revolution!!
Hi everyone, have read every post, thank you to all who have posted, especially kanara and beavis1 for sharing their knowledge. I can see the way round these problems is to educate yourself & be creative and determined!
I thought kanara's theoretical suggestion of buying a piece of land and dividing it up into 12/13 units, each registered under a different owner (trustworthy friends and family), and then moving from unit to unit every 28 days was really interesting.
I would like to hear how angeladavies1954 got on, I hope you got it sorted. Can i ask when you registered the different plots with the land registry, did you do this under different names? did you find a way round it? What was their specific problem with it?
I like the idea of living on my own land in a motor home, in a simple and sustainable way, growing my own food, maybe running my own business etc. but i also want to live in a community. I don't want to isolate myself, i would rather have a few friendly neighbours living in the same way, so we could all support each other.....
.....what about 12-13 people / couples / families forming a community, each buying a bit of land and moving every 28 days, could this work? Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions would be happy to hear. Anyone want to join me?!

x

Wow, what a great site, its a shame there are no easy answers. I would love to do just as lemontree80 says and divise a plane to outwit the annoying suits! - I am married with two young children, some chickens, rabbits, a dog, and fish. We both have responsible jobs, so dont want to be breaking the law, or become homeless after we embark on our adventurous dream.

We dont want to be living hand to mouth every month, and want so much more for our kids. We want to keep them in a good school, and believe we pay well for this education. We have both always worked. We want to teach our kids the value of life, not the value of our mortgage interest rate! We want to pay Council tax and do it right.

To that end, we want to sell our house, pay off our loans, we would walk away with a very small amount, maybe enough for a small plot of land and a small caravan to start off....We would have a reasonable wage to live on, so we could save (for the first time in 16years). We want to be part of a community, help our neighbours, and live off the land. We want to be self sufficient, and eventually build a small log cabin (not bothered if its one you can move), and start to really enjoy our life.

We need to find that loophole in the law that says we can do it.... I think the buying many plots of land could work!!
oooops! above meant to say "devise a plan" Ha - too late, need to go to bed! x
My mum currently lives in her mums garden as a "carer" as grandmas house is very small. she lives in a large static caravan hooked up to water, septic tank ect. My question is this, myself, my mum and my aunt (and our familys) want to buy a piece of land with pp for 1 house then put 2 statics on there as "an extension" to the house/log cabin. as we would of course be taking our meals in the house do we need pp? my mum didnt need it for hers so would the same apply?
Outsiderplus, you have a very similar story to me. I’m glad there are other ppl out there trying to do the same as me. Im 31 and im desperate to move out my mum's house. I run my own fitness company and its going well, but I still have no where enough to get a mortgage or rent a place on my own. My mum owns some land and I was thinking of putting a static or small caravan on there so i can save for a few years to get a mortgage by myself. I have thought about buying a motorhome and using sites once a week to get rid of waste and do laundry etc. I have also thought about moving onto a 12 month season holiday park and paying pitch fees. All I know is I need to move out but don't know which line to follow. Any suggestions or advice from ppl who have already taken my steps further, would be a big help? Thanks.
If anyone has an agricultural building on the land they have bought but have no planning permission for residency, then it may pay to be patient for a few months and wait for the outcome of the following government proposal (see pages 3 and 4) https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/226632/Greater_flexibilities_for_change_of_use.pdf
If things work out, change of use would be permitted automatically in some circumstances.
