Overpaid childrens tax credit 2002

Those lovely tax people have informed me that I was overpaid childrens tax credit of �850 through my PAYE in 2002, long before the current system of paying to individual bank accounts came into being.
I have asked them to check their calculations & am assured they are correct.
Anything I can do to put off the inevitable?
