if you pawn elecrtical goods (ie video recorder)at cash convertors type stores do they check that they're working ?and on what items do you need proof of ownership?

They do check they are working. They also ask for reciepts/proof of ownership. This is because a lot of things that have been alleged stolen end up in these places so they need to know they have not been. To protect the seller and the buyer!
