My nephew was a resident in a care home and was paying for a BT package, internet and phone line. He's since left there but still getting bills forwarded from BT. I don't believe that he ever signed for this and I think BT would try to hold customers to 2 years payments whether they use the service or not.

No expert but I think if one uses the service then acceptance is implied. However if the contract continued after leaving, and efforts were made to inform of the change, further charges ought not be down to the original user.

His mother acts as his 'agent' and has charge of his benefits. I think the bill's about £80 a quarter. She'll probably continue to pay even though he's not using the service anymore.
doubt it would be operating if he has not signed some kind of agreement, he may not have been aware when he did ?
Question Author
He doesn't remember but that's not to say that he didn't sign something. I'll try to get in touch with BT on Monday to see how long they want to hold him to the contract.
if your nephew has some kind of mental health issue they may not hold him to it, could try playing that card ?
Question Author
He suffered serious brain injuries in an accident. It would be worth mentioning but how much heart do big companies have, I wonder?
you can only try Sandy...was he even competent to take the contract on ?
Question Author
He wouldn't have been. But when he moved into the home his mother wanted to get his internet up and running quickly to help him settle in. Maybe one of the staff signed for the service.
therein may be your escape clause then...good luck Sandy x
You don't physically 'sign' a BT contract. It's all done over the phone or on-line.

OK. Thank you all. I'll get in touch with them on Monday and try to find out how long they want payments to continue.
