Did not know where to put this question - but on the subject of wind turbines - why are people so against them. I genuinely know nothing about them.

Because they are NIMBYs. However they will probably be the first to complain when the lights start going out on cold winters' evenings at about 1700 hours in about 4 year's time when the Grid fails because the UK electricity consumption has exceeded its maximum generating capacity.

Eh
I think they are beautifully elegant.
i am not a nimby, however i loathe every last one.
many people are against them because they are ugly, costly and a rip off. For some unknown reason the politicians seem to think they are the answer to all our future energy needs ( must be the backhanders), the machines cost an arm and a leg to make , and we pay for them in "green" taxes on our bills. No I do not like them.
A great fuss is being made about two being erected near here - mainly from people who can't even see them from their houses - and I agree with other answers that they are utter NIMBYs. I think they are so-o-o elegant - I wonder did our ancestors complain about pylons being placed all over the country and did the Dutch complain about their beautiful windmills?
i think they despoil the landscape, are not cost effective, may well do damage that is so far unseen in our coastal waters, and i for one would like to see them pulled down.
windmills are beautiful, and the ones i have seen were no longer in use, but left as a reminder of a our heritage, these monsters are not small, they do make a noise, and already been pointed out the blades on a number have sheared off when it was very windy. Hardly a good advert for a wind turbine.
For every article I've read that says they aren't cost effective, I've read another that says they aren't.

How is any normal person supposed to know what's actually true?

They're trying to erect some round here. I don't think they look particularly great but I can't say I'm that bothered. They'll compliment the new HS2 line.
*are
HS2 is another white elephant. I will be amazed if that ever gets going. So many people will lose homes, businesses around Euston area, and i believe they are still fighting the proposals.
I think most are against because if the sight/sound etc. I'm not really against them but I do try and make people aware of the misconception that these are in anyway a cost effective way to generate electricity.

I did see that Donald trump lost his case for having windfarms, so not content with despoiling the land with endless golf courses, though they have some use i suppose, they are going to put up these monstrosities.
Has anybody ever thought how many birds they must kill in a year? I bet it’s quite a few.
-- answer removed --
not just birds, but what about the damage to wildlife under the water, to an already fragile ecosystem.
You know, I think I do actually quite like them. They have a few bigish farms near my sisters in Cornwall and I'm always a bit fascinated by them.
trig, would you want them outside or nearby, because i know i wouldn't.
