Is there a charge for using a Mastercard for say paying for hotel/food shopping and if so how much. Thanks for any answers.

not to you. Credit card companies charge the retailers.
The credit card comany will charge the store/service for the transaction, usually around 2% I think. Sometimes the charge is passed on to the customer, as most airlines do.
Tends to be for such things as theatre tickets, some heating oil companies charge. They put a % of spend on card. I personally have never been charged for anything I spend on it and provided you pay the full balance by due date, there is no interest either. If a company I haven't used before I do tend to ask just in case then I would use my debit card where there is no charge.
